Happy Halloween from Monterrey!

Hola from Mexico,

Today is Halloween and the holiday is celebrated here in Mexico as well. The children wear costumes and go from house to house for candy treats, but, unlike the USA, they do not say "Trick or Treat"; they say "Halloween, Halloween!". Jessica is going to wear a "green shirt" and dress up as Dr. Cantu, and I am going to wear a hospital gown and dress up as a "ketamine coma patient!" (You have to do something to not go crazy, especially after being in a hospital for 2 1/2 months now!) I understand that my daughter Michelle in N.Y. is dressing up as Bazooka Bubble Gum and my older daughter Katherine, who is away at college, is dressing up as a policewoman, and her boyfriend Paul is going as a prisoner.

Update on Jessica: Sorry I didn't blog yesterday. Jessica was running low grade fevers and so cultures were drawn on her J-tube site. Today the fevers seem to have stopped, thank God! Jessica received another ketamine booster and so we continue on the path of "small steps", as Dr. "Green Shirt" always says! She is still experiencing troubles with her vision, or "static vision" and last night we had a special visitor who came to say some special prayers for Jessica's vision to return! I will tell you more about this in an upcoming blog.

We ask for continued prayers for Jessica's healing and restoration of her sight. Please pray also for her fellow coma buddy - Devon - as she had some mouth surgery performed yesterday and is experiencing some difficulties with her healing as well. We have gotten very close with them since we have both been here for the same amount of time, and even though our paths to getting here are very different, these two young ladies - Jessica and Devon - fight hard each day to try to get back to some semblance of a "normal" life - free of RSD and of all of the symptoms it causes!

So, go out today, and have fun "Trick or Treating" and handing out candies to all the children in their costumes! Life is all about living and making all of those memories that come to mean so much! May God bless you all and keep you safe in his care!

"The Lord will keep you from all harm - he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore." Psalms 121:7&8

From Monterrey, with love,

Update on Jessica:
Jessica is continuing to try to work on the "small steps" she needs to take while here in the Hospital San Jose Tec de Monterrey. We continue with the boosters she needs for the RSD pain and also the other rehabilitative steps needed for her journey to a better functioning life. The "little" things that when you are healthy you take for granted. Such as: we are trying to gradually each day raise the head of her bed in small increments so that she can go from a laying down position to eventually a sitting up position - something she has been unable to do for quite some time now. It involves putting cushions to support her head and neck and also her own body trying to be able to not have that "vertigo" feeling you get. It is something that is going to take time and effort and patience - a "re-training" of the brain! Jessica is a fighter, as you all know! With your prayers, her determination, and God's divine help - we will eventually see the light at the end of the tunnel!

ALSO - I would like to send out Special Birthday Wishes today to Chyo! She is Dr. Zavala's (aka Dr. "Rainbow's") special cook and helper. She has been with Dr. Zavala for many, many years and she has been helping her to cook and puree and make such delicious things for Jessica - such as homemade applesauce (from the apples grown here in Saltillo, Mexico); lentils, pureed chicken, and egg custards, to name a few!

**Feliz Cumpleanos Senora Chyo & Muchas Gracias Por Todo Que Tu Haces Para Mi Hija Jessica --- Con Mucho Amor, La madre de Jessica, Sarah Gina**

"For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me..." Matthew 25:35

In God's love, always,

Ketamine Booster Today - #9

Hi to all,

TO VIEW JESSICA ON FOX TV - CLICK ON LINK:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PW_vstm0bS8

UPDATE ON JESSICA:
Today Jessica will be receiving another ketamine booster (#9) and we are thankful for the continued forward movement in her treatment. While she is undergoing the booster, Dr. "Green Shirt" will be putting a new anesthetic into her implanted pump in order to help with her treatment here as well. She is experiencing some pain with her J-tube again, so it is our hope that we can increase her intake by mouth and eventually get rid of the J-tube all together. For now it has to stay; as it is our "safety" in case she can't continue to tolerate adequate feedings.

For all of you that know me, you will be happy to hear that I was able to go outside and go to the local store (H.E.B.), which is like a Stop-n-Shop or Publix, with Cecilia while she was here. This was my first time out of the hospital since we got here! We hopped in a green cab and it felt great to be out, but also a little wierd as well. Dr. Cantu was giving a booster to Devon, so Jessica felt safe enough knowing he was right next door, and Devons' mom stayed with her while I was gone for the hour! Originally Dr. Rainbow was going to stay with her, as she is the only one that Jessica says she will stay with, but the other hospital where she works, had a very complicated serious case, and she was desperately needed there! Please pray for the little 7-month old baby girl who received a gunshot wound to the head and her mother as well! Thank you!

Thank you again for all your continued prayers for Jessica and her healing.

Remember:

LIVE YOUR LIFE FOR GOD, AND HE WILL BLESS YOUR DAYS!!!

All our love,

Jessica's Mom

A "Special" Message Sent to Jessica !

Hi everyone,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PW_vstm0bS8

Special thanks go out to Carol Biron, Nancy Sustersic, Karin Daniels, and all of Team Jessica for a job well done at the Princess House Fundraiser last Saturday in Naples. Jessica says thank you all for all the hard work put in - she loves you all!

Jessica received ketamine booster #8 yesterday. With each booster we continue to see the "small steps", as Dr. Cantu always says, that she needs to take on this journey here in Monterrey, Mexico. Most boosters take about 2 hours and everyone responds to them differently and each patient requires different doses - it is what Dr. Cantu knows the best and it is amazing to watch him "at work" with his coma patients! We love and admire Dr. "Green Shirt" for his work with RSD.

Yesterday, I spoke about a letter that Jessica received from Marco Island, Fl. I contacted the family to be sure that they wouldn't mind if I shared it with all of you. They were delighted to have me write about their "journey" as well. Olivia heard of Jessica's story and decided to write to her. Here are some excerpts of her letter to Jessica:

Dear Jessica,
My name is Olivia Davis. I am 11 years old and live in Marco Island, Fl. My Mom read me your story and I feel sad that you have had to go through all that and are still having to. I had a rare brain disease and have gone through 5 brain surgeries to try and help stop my seizures. I was 7 when I got sick. Last April I had a big surgery and I was paralyzed on my entire left side. I had to learn how to sit up, stand, walk, and move again. I spent all summer in therapy and trying to do homework. Sometimes I felt like I would never get better and sometimes I felt like I could do anything I used to if I just put my mind to it. I focused on the positive stuff like I would get better and get the seizures out of my life. When I was sad or down I talked to my Mom and she would hug me. That made me feel more positive. I am in 5th grade now and I love being back at school. I even learned how to swim again.
Keep thinking positive and soon you will get what you want. Be hopeful, not doubtful. I hope you get better soon. Our prayers are with you.
Peace out, Keep on dreaming.
Olivia

What an amazing letter from an 11 year old who has had to face her own trials as well! Jessica was so touched by her letter! We can't wait to meet her when we return to the states. Our prayers go out to Olivia and her family as well for continued recovery from Rasmussen's Encephalitis. You can visit her website at: www.oliviadavisfoundation.org.

This is a special "Shout Out" to Olivia who reads Jessica's blog!
Remember this Olivia - It takes 2 --- GOD & YOU --- so keep fighting because You are stronger than any illness and God loves you so!!! The Lord says:
It's worth It. / Walk with Me. / Trust Me. / Wait with Me. /
I WILL REWARD YOU!!!

All our love,
Jessica's Mom

Help From NY Arrived Yesterday!!! 2,000 Views of YouTube!!!

Hi to all,

VIEW JESSICA ON FOX TV - CLICK ON LINK:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PW_vstm0bS8

Yesterday was an eventful day as we welcomed our dear friend Cecilia to Room #844 in Hospital San Jose Tec de Monterrey. As you may know, she is originally from Colombia and speaks fluent spanish, so she is going to be really helpful in getting us different things that we need. She brought along with her goodies from home, get well cards from the Naples fundraiser and a get well sign-in book from the Garden City fundraiser, as well as presents from some of our friends! She also brought along a special letter to Jessica which I will share with you as soon as I know it's OK with the family that sent it. It is nice to see a familiar face here in Mexico and to have her companionship as well!

Today, Jessica is scheduled to receive another ketamine booster to help alleviate some of her symptoms and to also continue the progress in the movements of her legs. These boosters are essential post coma and necessary to reducing the pain associated with RSD and for healing the body as a whole! Dr. Cantu would also like to do an MRI of her brain to rule out certain causes that are still plaguing her in regards to her constant "headaches" that she is still experiencing. We ask for continued prayer for her vision to be restored to normal as quick as possible!

I would also like to personally thank Gloria from Union Church for bringing over some books, cards, magazines and a fan for the room, and also Sylvia for always bringing special prayers & also goodies from Lety's - a really delicious bakery or "panaderia" here in Monterrey.

Also, Jessica and I had the pleasure of meeting someone very special to our dear Dr. Rainbow -- her husband, Dr. Zavala! He came to see Jessica on Saturday and we were honored with his visit! We had heard so much about him and I must say he is a very spiritual man; highly intelligent, most sincere, and also funny at times! He is a genuinely nice man and they make a very nice couple! They had stopped by after mass and before meeting up with some friends to say hi! I thanked him for "sharing" his wife with us - as she has taken a very special interest in Jessica and I must say the feeling is mutual! There is a very special love between them. Jessica looks forward to her visits everyday and she really feels that Dr. Rainbow is her special "angel" from God! Her love is felt in everything she does and she is like family to us, more than words can ever say!

So today - let us thank God for those special "friends" that are always there for us and those who become so much more than friends - those that become our "family"!!!

"Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends." John 15:13
"A friend loves at all times..." Proverbs 17:17

With all our love,
Sarah Gina (Jessica's Mom)

Jessica's Journey to Getting Her Life Back

By Sarah Gina (Jessica's Mom)

As we begin this journey toward renewed health we would like to express our sincere heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Dr. Anthony Kirkpatrick and all the work he has done and continues to do in order to bring patients like my daughter Jessica back to a more meaningful life and restored from this devastating illness. Also, special thanks to Dr. Fernando Cantu and his team of doctors in Mexico for taking on a difficult case like my daughters, Words cannot express the renewed sense of hope that we have that one day, our Jessica, can regain her life that has been taken away from her – God Bless you all!

Jessica’s Story

Once an A+ student who loved school, was involved in many extracurricular activities, played varsity tennis, lacrosse and gymnastics and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, our daughter Jessica has spent the last 3 years incapacitated, paralyzed, unable to sit or walk and eat. She spends her days confined to a hospital bed, wearing sunglasses and noise-canceling headphones, due to severe light and sound sensitivity.

The pain she feels is indescribable and all attempted treatments have not even come close to relieving her suffering.

She has seen many doctors, undergone numerous painful tests and procedures, has been prescribed various medications, and has been hospitalized frequently including being intubated and on a ventilator. She is severely debilitated and currently is only 92 pounds. This is certainly no life for a 21 year old young woman!

Jessica is suffering from neurologic Lyme disease and Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), a severely debilitating and painful neuromuscular disorder. She suffers daily with constant sharp, stabbing, tingling and burning pain; throughout her body; severe headaches; paralysis; intense muscle spasms; gastroparesis; seizures; twisting of her limbs (dystonia); sensitivity to any touch (allodynia); extreme sensitivity to lights and sounds; excessive sweating; swelling; fevers; softening of bones; decreased hair growth; redness and discoloration of the limbs; and painful skin ulcers. The pain is constant and unrelenting, but despite her suffering, her faith in God remains and she still has hope for her future.

Jessica's painful skin lesions

Jessica's journey began in 1999, when she was only 11 years old. She became very ill with Mono and was bed bound for 3 months. She subsequently developed RSD (stage 1) of the lower right leg. She received early intervention and returned to playing sports and enjoying her life.

Jessica, age 15, at summer camp

Four years later, in 2003, while away at a sleep-away camp, she developed a rash behind her right knee, coincidentally in the same leg that previously had RSD!

At the time, the camps nurse & doctor told her that it was “duck rash” – a rash from swimming in the lake with duck feces. However, Jessica was able to obtain photos from camp from another camper which shows the classic “bulls-eye” rash from Lyme disease! It wasn’t until much later and only after developing symptoms and becoming very ill, was the diagnosis of Lyme disease and Babesiosis (another tick-borne infection) made.

Most people (and doctors!) have no idea how serious Lyme disease can become and no clue how to properly diagnose it. Unfortunately, if she would have been promptly diagnosed and treated for Lyme disease, the RSD would not have been triggered and she would not be suffering.

July 2003, Jessica's Lyme disease rash

If it wasn’t for her doctor, Dr. Liegner, and his expertise with complex cases of Lyme, and his determination to try any means in getting her well, by getting a “team” of doctors on her case, we wouldn’t be here today, still fighting. We owe him a deep sense of gratitude for all he does for Jessica!

During these past three years and with the pain becoming more intense and unbearable she has been seeing Dr. Finkelstein for pain management. He has even made house calls to spare her the pain of coming by ambulance to his office. Jessica has been treated with multiple pain medications, at the highest possible doses, as well as an implanted dilaudid pain pump, which delivers potent medication straight into her spine. Many doctors have told us that with the amount of medications Jessica was taking would be enough to “kill a horse”—yet they had little to no effect on her. If it wasn’t for Dr. Finkelstein trying to alleviate her constant, severe, unrelenting pain, I don’t know how she would have managed. He is very special to us as well.

Recently Jessica was transported by air ambulance to Tampa, Florida to see Dr. Anthony Kirkpatrick, a world renowned RSD expert. Dr. Kirkpatrick told us that Jessica is one of the most debilitated patients he has ever seen.

Jessica getting into the air-ambulance to go see Dr. Kirkpatrick

Upon his testing and because Jessica's condition is so severe, Dr. Kirkpatrick is recommending the only treatment available that can possibly help relieve her suffering, and afford her some semblance of a “normal” life - the Ketamine Coma Procedure - a clinical trial that is being conducted in Monterrey, Mexico.

During this procedure Jessica will be put into a coma , with the hope that her nerves, brain and spinal cord will “reset” -so that her nervous system sends the correct signals to her brain.

Yes, this is a radical, scary treatment, however, for Jessica, "scary" is thinking that she could spend the rest of her life in this condition, unable to walk, eat, or take care of herself. Since all reasonable treatments have failed to help her, we feel we must try everything possible to help Jessica regain her life.

We understand that due to Jessica’s fragile condition, there is a high risk associated with this procedure. We are also aware that other patients with severe RSD like Jessica's have had success.

Jessica’s goal is to one day become a doctor. Our hope is that with this study she can have that chance. As her Mom, I know that she will be a great doctor because when a patient presents in her office and says “Doctor, I am in pain and words cannot express how bad it is” – my daughter –Dr. Jessica– will be able to say - :I know how you feel, I’ve been there too. So, take a seat and let me tell you a story”….

We are so thankful and feel so blessed to have been led to Dr. Kirkpatrick.

God is good and with his help guiding Dr. Cantu and Dr. Kirkpatrick, our hope is for Jessica to be able to return to us whole again and pain-free!
